Sacred Ceremony Shawls

Use for Meditation, Prayer or pure Enjoyment!

I've heard it many times from students and well-wishers: Many people desire to learn to meditate, or to meditate more effectively, but have trouble entering or maintaining a meditative state.  Similar expressions occur over the subject of extended prayer.  The reasons vary, but one theme often comes up - simply that of becoming distracted by virtually anything - especially discomfort.  

For beginning students, I like to refer to the beginning meditation experience as somewhat akin to the labor process for a new mother.  All those things we normally like and think will never bother us - can and probably will.  And this is because all our senses can become more "awake," shall we say.  Sometimes even that wonderful blanket we watch movies in can become a distraction during meditation or prayer.  

So when it comes to meditation and in-depth/extended prayer (like labor), keeping it simple, comfortable and without expectations is the key.  This is one area where spiritual tools can be of assistance.  Later as you become more experienced, you may probably soar right past most irritants.  But for now, KISS.  (And that stands for "Keep It Simple Silly," by the way....)  

Something as simple as a quality shawl can prove to be a fantastic tool for many reasons.  Reason one simply being psychological:  when we put on that sacred shawl for that sacred purpose, it becomes easier for our mind and body to let go of the world around - like those dirty dishes in the sink, troubles at work and the sounds of the street outside - and it helps us to focus on the quiet purpose we intended. There is a lot to be said for ritual.  A shawl can go a long way in helping a beginning student focus.

Those more experienced in meditation and lengthy prayer also find benefit in the use of sacred ceremony shawls.  Some elders (and others) in our meditation groups have experienced drops in body temperature, and feeling cold, during and after meditation.  Some weren't really distracted during meditation, but others struggled with it after leaving the meditative state. Covering up in a blanket is certainly one solution, unless the blanket becomes in cumbersome or scratchy. During meditation, the physical body does enter a state akin to that of sleep, so it is a good idea to cover up a bit for the sake of the physical vessel, just as we do year-round for nightly rest. But keep in mind that unlike sleep, the mind (and body) is awake.

These are great physical reasons to use a shawl during meditation or prayer, but many find that the use of shawls during sacred ceremony actually enhance their experiences. Using a shawl can enhance the sacred purpose and intention you have set. Yogi masters recommend the use of a shawl during meditation and many in the Jewish and other faiths use prayer shawls.  Cloaks and robes have also been used for sacred purposes.  Though the cultures and minute details may differ, the general intent and purpose is much the same.
